The violin is a string instrument, usually with four strings tuned in perfect fifths. It is the smallest, highest-pitched member of the violin family of string instruments, which includes the viola, cello, and double bass. The violin is sometimes informally called a fiddle, regardless of the type of music played on it. The word violin comes from the Middle Latin word vitula, meaning stringed instrument; this word is also believed to be the source of the Germanic "fiddle". The violin, while it has ancient origins, acquired most of its modern characteristics in 16th-century Italy, with some further modifications occurring in the 18th and 19th centuries. Violinists and collectors particularly prize the instruments made by the Gasparo da Salò, Giovanni Paolo Maggini, Stradivari, Guarneri and Amati families from the 16th to the 18th century in Brescia and Cremona and by Jacob Stainer in Austria. Great numbers of instruments have come from the hands of "lesser" makers, as well as still greater numbers of mass-produced commercial "trade violins" coming from cottage industries in places such as Saxony, Bohemia, and Mirecourt. Many of these trade instruments were formerly sold by Sears, Roebuck and Co. and other mass merchandisers. A person who makes or repairs violins is called a luthier, or simply a violin maker. The parts of a violin are usually made from different types of wood (although electric violins may not be made of wood at all, since their sound may not be dependent on specific acoustic characteristics of the instrument's construction), and it is usually strung with gut, nylon or other synthetic, or steel strings. Someone who plays the violin is called a violinist or a fiddler. The violinist produces sound by drawing a bow across one or more strings (which may be stopped by the fingers of the other hand to produce a full range of pitches), by plucking the strings (with either hand), or by a variety of other techniques. The violin is played by musicians in a wide variety of musical genres, including Baroque music, classical, jazz, folk music, and rock and roll. The violin has come to be played in many non-western music cultures all over the world. From Wikipedia under the

From Google Video Search: "violin" How to nicely tell a private violin instructor for 7 years that I'm moving on to another instructor? Q. My son has been with this violin instructor for 7 year, he's doing very well at school orchestra, all-region and all-state competitions. And we had good relationship with the instructor. Lately my son expressed desire to study with a more prominent violin teacher, we had an interview and he was accepted. Now, we don't know how to tell the private instructor that we are leaving him. Help! Asked by BillBill W - Tue Jan 22 11:56:20 2008 - - 4 Answers - Comments A. The teacher will probably be thrilled that your son was accepted by the more prominent instructor. I know that my goal is for my students to all surpass me, and moving on to more advanced instructors is part of the process. I would not put it in the terms of leaving the first instructor as much as I would stress that you are sharing the happy news that your son has been accepted at the higher level thanks to the ifrst instructor's help and support. The gift and the notice is still a good idea, as is making sure to recommend the first instructor to other students at every opportunity. Be sure and invite that instructor to recitals and concerts and try to maintain a relationship if at all possible. We all like to see even our former… [cont.] Answered by cconsaul - Wed Jan 23 15:36:59 2008 How to buy a good quality Violin?
Q. I need a new violin because my old one broke. I just need to know how to get the better buy of purchasing a violin. Thanks. Asked by Karena - Sat Jun 7 14:13:48 2008 - - 2 Answers - Comments A. Well, the ultimate best option is to find a local music store and go there. It's difficult to describe everything to look for online, especially without first being aware of your general price range. Because of this, I strongly suggest that you go to a music store. You can give them your price range, and they'll do everything they can to help you find a perfect instrument for your needs. In my experience, many small music store owners and workers play string instruments themselves and have a lot of experience in it. However, if you can't find a local music store or for some reason don't want to go to one, you can look online. My ultimate recommendation for an online purchase is Southwest Strings. They have good quality… [cont.] Answered by Deatha - Tue Jun 10 13:27:02 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "violin" |
