How does one handle sore throat at home before seeing a doctor?

A. Gargle with very, very salty warm water Chloraseptic sprays or drops actually contain an ingredient similar to the novacaine that your dentist uses to numb your teeth for dental work. It numbs on contact and is very effective. Throat coat tea - available in the tea section, or if your pharmacy has a homeopthic section, you could find ti there. It's a "Natural Remedies" tea. Has a strong licorice flavor. My kids love it. Just don't take it after the Chloraseptic or you will be rinsing away all the numbing stuff. ;) If you are running a fever, consider going to have a culture done to check for strep. If it is strep, antibiotics will take care of the pain quickly! Hope you are feeling better!

How long will strep throat last if left untreated?
Q. I've been havin a severe sore throat for 6 days now with no other symptoms so I'm pretty sure it's strep. I can't currently go to a doctor so I'm left to deal with it by home remedies and LOTS of Ny Quil and Ibuprofen. Will it just eventually go away and if so, how much longer should it take? Or must I seek antiiotics?

Is it normal to experience burning in your throat 3 weeks after radiation treatment to the Throat?
Q. My mom underwent 35 radiation treatments for a tumor in her throat. It is now 3.5 weeks after treatment and she has a hard time eating and says her throat feels like it's on fire. Is this normal to feel burning 3.5 weeks after treatment? If so any suggestions as what to do to help relieve the pain. She hates the magic mouthwash and she is taking hydroxodone-acetiphenimen, which she says helps slightly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

A. I had 50 radiation treatments to my throat over 2 months. It took another 3 months for my throat to heal from the aftereffects. What is going on is the skin inside of the treatment field(the esophagus) has become burned and blistered and as a result has sloughed off and the new skin there is completely raw. When I was going through that I had to use morphine just to eek down a few sips of water--the numbing throat wash was so gross that it made sick and wasn't worth it. That was definitely the hardest part of radiation treatment. It was also the time when I lost the most weight because it was so painful to eat. The easiest way to drink was to have my fluids at room temp and very soft foods like pastas at room temp. I hope your mom does… [cont.]

What is the difference between strep throat and tonsillitis?
Q. I am from America, but this summer I went on a missions trip to Wales and got very sick. I am normally diagnosed with strep throat, however, in Wales the 2 doctors i saw had no idea what strep throat was. They did not test me for it, but diagnosed me as having tonsillitis. What is the difference between the two?
Asked by amanda c - Wed Dec 30 03:52:24 2009 - Infectious Diseases - 9 Answers - 2 Comments

A. Well, tonsillitis and strep are basically the same, strep throat is a specific sore throat where as tonsillitis is non specific which means it can be anything from staph aureas to probably strep. With a strep infection however, it's prone to spreading to different areas of the body- rheumatic fever for instance. Tonsillitis stays in the throat. I highly suggest you MAKE them do a rapid strep test or blood agar plate incubation (have them look for Beta hemolysis on a blood plate) before they insist on a tonsillectomy. It could easily be cured with antibiotics... I'm sorry, but if an American CLT with a two year degree can outsmart an 8 year trained Wales Doctor there is something wrong.

Why does my throat and stomach feel upset when I eat certain fruits?
Q. It's this weird fuzzy feeling that really isn't pleasant. It's with things like canteloupe, avocado, and plums and other things. I like these things but I get this weird feeling in my throat when I eat them. Any answers?

A. You are probably allergic to them. My cousin is allergic to the mold that grows on melons, maybe you are too. Go to an allergist to get a scratch test for the fruits that make you feel funny.

What does a sore throat due to quitting smoking feel like?
Q. I have stopped smoking going on my 5th day. For the last 3 days I have had a terrible sore throat. I read that a sore throat is a sympton of quitting, but how bad is it? My throat hurts so bad at times, I can not swallow. I just want to make sure it is part of the Quitters Flu, and not something I need to go to the DR for. (My throat is also very swollen and red).

A. Hi I quit smoking with Chantix & am on day 15. I have got the sore throat & phlegmy type sinus problem, but my doctor did tell me to expect this and it would slowly go away. My daughter quit smoking 1 1/2 months ago and has the same thing. But, we didn't have the same swollen, red throat you are describing so it's probably time for a trip to the doctors. Good Luck

What do you do if your throat rips or does it heal on its own?
Q. I've been sick and I've been throwing up and yesterday it hurt worse and my throat has hurt all day. Not sore throat hurt, like throat rip hurt. Does a rip in your throat heal on its own or do you need to go to a doctor or do you know any remedies to heal faster or such? It's been a day or two, it's not a sore throat. I know that's definate.
Asked by kelsey_and_brooke_bff - Fri Oct 9 18:13:05 2009 - Other - General Health Care - 2 Answers - Comments

A. The contents of your stomach including strong acids find their way back to your mouth when you throw up. These strong acids can damage the lining of your throat and will definitely hurt. If Iwere you I will drink cold beverages (non alcoholic) maybe even ice cream to take care of the inflammation. It should get better after a couple of days. Good luck.

A. Same reason alot of people get dry skin. The air stream changes, and the air is coming from a different direction, meaning we are catching dry air instead of moist air. The dry air pulls moisture from your skin, and also from your mouth and throat. Its worse if you sleep with your mouth open. Try drinking an extra glass of water before bed, using a humidifier, or just having a halls in the morning. Your throat will just be a little chapped. I know mine goes away as soon as I take a drink of something.

How do you make a scratchy throat go away?
Q. About a week ago I was sick with the flu. I'm pretty much better now, except I have a slight cough and a scratchy throat. The bad news is that tomorrow (EST) I have to sing in front of the entire school! (Approx. 1,100 people). Anyways, I'm usually a pretty good singer but not with a scratchy throat... Anyways, I was wondering if you have any remedies or recipes or excercises that help get rid of a scratchy throat. Thankyou sooo much! Sonya xoxo

What is the difference between strep throat and losing your voice?
Q. I have a really bad sore throat and when I stand up I feel dizzy. And I don't really have a runny nose but just a little. So do I have strep throat or am I losing my voice?
Asked by dancingstar** - Tue Jun 2 14:13:33 2009 - Infectious Diseases - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Strep throat is caused by a viral infection, and it is fairly specific. Your symptoms can be for a lot of things, i.e. swollen glands, flu, etc. Losing your voice is caused by abusing it or it may be a symptom. Hope you feel better, be sure to see a doctor!

Is it common to experience sore throat when just beginning to wear a retainer?
Q. I got my braces off a couple days ago and have been instructed to wear my retainer 24/7 (except when brushing or eating). I've been wearing it all the time...however I noticed that I have developed a sore throat since then: mostly it only hurts when I swallow. (And appears to be getting worse) I can't help but think that these two things are correlated: is my retainer causing my sore throat?

What can i do about a sore throat and the loss of my voice?

My throat is pretty swollen now and my voice has gone from being very hoarse to almost non-existent. What can i do to soothe my throat and help recover my voice?

A. Thyme tea with honey helps your voice come back. Don't drink cold drinks. Don't talk too much, don't whisper either, let your voice rest.

How can I heal my throat/vocal chords for singing after a non singing related injury?
Q. I play ice hockey and I got struck in the throat a few weeks ago by a puck. The outside of the throat now doesn't have pain, but when I sing I have pain and I have lost my low end range, which is the basis for my singing voice. What's the best way I can heal and recover from this type of injury? Is it the same as I would from stressing my voice from singing?
Asked by steve_the_canuck - Tue Nov 18 09:42:43 2008 - Injuries - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Get your throat scoped by voice specialist. He or she will be able to assess if you have any serious structural damage. Avoid talking and don't whisper. Whispering is worse for your chords than talking.

What would cause my throat to feel this way?
Q. I've been having this problem for about a week now and it's starting to bother me and its also annoying. It feels like my throat is tightening up or it feels like my throat muscles are tight. Sometimes when I swallow it feels like there is something stuck in my throat. I can breath just fine and I'm not wheezing or anything like that. But this feeling in my throat causes me to swallow more often. My throat isn't sore. Sometimes it feels like my throat is swollen. What could be causing this? Are there any home remedies for this?
Asked by healthnut - Sun Mar 2 11:16:20 2008 - Pain & Pain Management - 4 Answers - Comments

A. Sometimes people develop esophageal strictures which usually don't develop overnight. Also sometimes, food might get caught in a pre-existing hiatal hernia which could cause you to have a full feeling in your esophagus. And sometimes, food actually can get lodge in the throat and stay. But considering that you say you are able to swallow, I would rule that out. I would schedule an appointment with my family doctor, if I were you, to rule out any of these things and find out what is going on.

How long can a child carry strep throat without it effecting her?
Q. My sister, she woke up with a soar throat & says her eyes are heavy. She just recently spent the night at my cousin house on sunday, and they had just got over strep throat. Is it possible she could have it. How long can a person carry strep throat without it really effecting them?
Asked by Camille - Thu Feb 19 13:25:30 2009 - Other - Health - 3 Answers - Comments

A. If your cousin had just been treated for it than she didn't get it from him or her.Once you've been on antibiotics for 2-3 days you are very unlikely to spread it to someone else.If she gets any more symptoms then she needs to be checked out by a doctor.Strep has to be treated, it doesn't just go away like a cold does.

How to solve throat problems while singing?
Q. I sing in a band that involves a lot of screaming. The sort of outward vocals i do take quite a toll on my throat. How do I go about screaming or singing without these problems occurring as frequently?
Asked by Steve X - Thu Jan 28 21:07:51 2010 - Singing - 2 Answers - Comments

A. hot tea. not hot to burn your throat lol but tea with lemon will work. also if your in a band that involves screaming, im assuming metal, do a lot of vocal warm up that don't involve screaming, warm up to soft acoustic songs then when ever your ready to perform or sing your wont put a big strain on your vocal chords.
