My 8 month old was diagnosed with swollen vocal chords & put on previcid for reflux?
Q. Doctor thinks that the reflux might be causing the swollen vocal chords. Anyone else have this happen? He's always sounded very raspy(since he was born)

A. Hi! I have 6 years of peds clinical experience and see this quite a bit. There are lots of babies on Zantac or other reflux meds. The good news is that babies usually out grow this and can eventually go off of the medications. If you don't notice improvement after a few weeks on the meds, I'd check back with the doc to make sure you shouldn't try something else Good luck! Missy

Is Swollen glands caused by vocal training, karoake singing and the use of a communal microphone?
Q. I had a mild discomfort in the throat area which graduated into a bad sore throat and swollen glands. Ran a high fever, after a night of chronic coughing, resulted in pain around the lower chest and lower back pain. After a course of antibiodics, fever has subsided, the cough has tapered but I still feel sore around throat area. Doctor told me the glands around my throat are very badly swollen. My question is since I have taken up vocal training recently, could the cause be due to my vocal training (from low to high pitch), karoake singing and the use of a microphone which is shared by many people. Pls advise.

A. It sounds like you have had an infection, it would not have been caused by the things you mention.

How to you reduce swelling in the throat/vocal chords?
Q. Lately, i have found it difficult to sing in my head voice because it feels muffled, forced, and like i don't have any control over it. Everyone i ask tells me i probably have allergies, but benadryl doesn't seem to help and i was wondering if there's anything i could gargle so that i can sing normally? thank you sooo much!

A. Make a hot tottie, can be made in different ways, but i make some black tea, then add some lemon juice and a bit of honey to it. take a cinnamon stick and stir it in. next, add one shot of whiskey. This is what I always use the night before a show if my vocal chords are feeling swollen or tired. Best of luck!

How does a doctor look at the vocal chords?
Q. I know they use a scope but do you have to be put under? I have been having throat problems for about 4 months now. Excess mucus, sore throat. Two doctors have said its allergies and given me antibitocs for the swollen glands on my neck. No results. Anyone have ideas? The carpet in the house has already been removed.

A. i had this done today. they spray local numbing spray in your nose and then insert a scope in your nose down the back of your throat. It is not bad at all. they get pictures/video of your vocal chords and the whole thing takes only a few minutes

Could I have a vocal node and what should I do?
Q. It feels like there is a swollen thing that is sometimes soar and my voice is raspy on higher notes. I have a lead in my school musical and have been singing a lot lately. Could it be just a raspy voice and swollen vocal chords from singing too much? I asked my mom about going to the Doctor about it but she doesn't believe me. She says I'm being a hypochondriac and it's not possible for me to develop one from singing in chorus and having a lead in a few school musicals. She said only people who sing 24/7 can get one. I thought I might have had one before and my choir and musical coach said I should go to an ear nose and throat Doctor but my mom just took me to a regular Doctor and he didn't even know what a vocal node was. She also won't… [cont.]

A. Take it from someone who has been singing for over 30 years and teaching voice for over 10 get it checked out by an Ear Nose and Throat specialist. It is not necessarily how long you are singing but how you are producing the sound. Tell your mom you are not being a hypochondriac about this. If you want to keep your voice and enjoy singing, then get this checked as soon as possible. It may be something minor or it may not only a specialist can tell you for sure. Make sure that you tell him/her exactly how it feels and what you are feeling - do not leave anything out.

Why is my throat swollen to the point where I can barely talk or swallow water?
Q. I am also experiencing bloody, chapped lips and severe headaches. There is a lot of pressure around my sinuses. What is wrong? People are telling me I sound like a deaf person the way I am talking because of how impaired my vocal chords are. :(

A. Get thee to a doctor, my dear child. In the meantime, take some Benadryl (available at any drugstore or supermarket). You sound as though you are having an allergic reaction to something, and you don't want your throat to close. This could be a medical emergency. Get and take some Benadryl right away, and see your doctor as very soon as possible. If the Benadryl doesn't improve your symptoms, still get to a doctor. To a doctor with you, either way. Godspeed in healing.

HELP.. need home remedies for swollen/sore throat ?
Q. I normally use hot tea with lemon and honey, but I am still very hoarse, no other symptons than my usual spring allergies, I am just wanting to know if there are any other home remedies out there so I can try them and see if they work better. BTW, I have already seen my doctor, there's no infection or other problem, my vocal chords just tend to swell if I have recently done alot of yelling. OK two add ons... 1st I did't mean I yell all the time, I meant I yelled for like 5 or more minutes at one time, I try not to yell very often, because of this reason. And number 2 I saw a doctor I do not have anyform of infection, and 3 thanks so far to all who suggested salt water, this took out the soreness and some swelling!

A. Gargling with warm salt water is good. Another way to help is to squeeze a lime in warm water with 4 teaspoons of honey and 1/4 teaspoon of salt then sip it. Also boil some milk to drink mixed with a pinch of pepper powder. Apply alternating cold and hot compresses to your throat. Gargle with 1 cup warm water and 1 cup apple cider vinegar. One teaspoon of coarsely powdered cinnamon, boiled in a glass of water with a pinch of pepper powder, and two teaspoons of honey can be taken as a medicine. Two or three drops of cinnamon oil, mixed with a teaspoon of honey, also give immense relief. Mix equal parts of hydrogen perioxide and warm water and gargle. Eat some hot soup. Mix half a pack of jello with hot water and drink. I know more so if… [cont.]

Vocal health help!?
Q. Last night I performed in a show, where in 67% of my numbers, I was required to sing in beltvoice. I am a supporting role in this show, but I understudy a lead, so it is imperitive that I not get sick or that my voice does not go out. Especially because the thespian who plays the part that I understudy is getting sick. He feels that his cold is catching up with him, and is having some sinus troubles. I have been notified by the director that I will probably be going on for the lead tomorrow (Saturday). I woke up this morning, unable to sing in my higher register, but I could reach most notes in my chest voice. When my vocal chords are not in use, my throat feels swollen and scratched. Do you have any tips to help me rejuvinate my voice… [cont.]

A. Do not talk today if you can help it. Hydrate your body by drinking lots of water. Buy some Throat Coat (a hot tea that you typically find th ethe organic section of your grocery store) - it really works wonders. Hot water with lemon and honey is amazing for your throat as well. Gargling with baking soda and warm water sounds disgusting, but that helps quite a bit. Buy vitamin C drops (Halls Defense, for example) and use them all day. Rest, rest, rest, both your voice and your body. Catch a nap. You should be okay tonight, and hopefully you should be fine by tomorrow. Sing from your diaphragm, not your throat, when you belt. I know most of this is "duh," but I hope I helped!

Swollen Lymph Node and Cancer?
Q. I'm a 21yo male and I have had my right superclavicular lymph node (right above collarbone) swollen for about 6 months now. I went to the ER and requested the doctor do a CT scan on my brain and a X-Ray on my lungs. I have heard that it is a sign of cancer. Anyways my lymph node sometimes feels like it "slightly" but barely noticeably changes in size. Maybe it don't I dunno. It feels kinda rubbery and doesn't move very much and that's what worried me. I got my scans back from my doctor after being looked at by a radiologist and the doctor ...and he said that he see's no abnormalities in my chest x-ray nor my brain scan. He didn't do my neck. ' 2 weeks later, I finally cough up the $75 to go see the ENT since I have no health insurance.… [cont.]
Asked by Chris - Tue Nov 3 13:24:23 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The most common cause of swollen lymph nodes is when there is some sort of infection in the body. In some cases, lymph nodes can remain swollen for a long time after the infection has gone and in these cases they are termed residual lymph nodes. If you are not experiencing any other symptoms, then the chances of it being cancerous are much smaller. All the best for all your other test results

Swollen Throat? Tonsillitis?
Q. I've been going through days where my throat and the back of my mouth feels swollen, the muscle under my chin feels feels sore, and I have discomfort in my cheeks and sometimes pressure in my ear and head. Also, I tend to be OK when I first wake up but as the day progresses, these symptoms become more obvious There are some days where I feel fine and have none of these problems. Also, with regard to my throat, I notice that it is generally fine in the morning but the more I start talking and eating, that sensation of pressure in my throat (and feeling of pressure in the back of my mouth) gets worse. It's almost as if I have to stop talking period to get some relief. I've had all kinds of exams from bloodwork, endoscopy, neurology, etc… [cont.]

A. if you had tonsillitis, your doctor would have noticed it after all the tests he has run. he tells you everything is normal medically, so maybe the problem cant be cured with a medical doctor- maybe you have some emotional problem that is bothering you so much that it has manifested itself into a genuine pain. this can happen. perhaps talking to a therapist about whatever is troubling you will help you solve the problem. good luck.

Q. I'm a singer with a constant sore throat. I went to an ent and they put a camera down my throat. Said a lot of mucus on my vocal chords but no pylops. One specialist said GERD was making throat sore, other said take mucinex. They argued about it and went with mucinex. All it does it make my ears click more and throat is still sore. They think allergies is to blame for the swollen eyes. Any ideas? This cost $800 and nothings solved, it's been 6 months and I'm still booking gigs 3x a week but my voice is giving out. I can't hit any high notes
Asked by chris w james - Sat Apr 11 19:11:27 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Your ENT wasn't very good, its undoubtedly maxillary sinusitis, with an accompanied middle ear effusion. The sinus infected mucus drains down the throat at night making it sore and infected, the eustachion tube in the ears are swollen and not draining accounting for the pressure (noise) variance. You might even have strep along with that. See a good ent about getting a throat culture and the ear drained, some ampicillin 500mg three times a day, chlortrimeton 12mg four times a day, and even vancomycin if it turns out to be strep.

See a good ent about getting a throat culture and the ear drained, some ampicillin 500mg three times a day, chlortrimeton 12mg four times a day, and even vancomycin if it turns out to be strep.

what's up with this thing in my throat/esophagus? is it cancer? cyst on vocal chords?
Q. okay so for a few years now i've had this weird lump (that's what it feels like, i'm not sure if there is physically a lump) thing down on the left lower side of the inside of my throat/esophagus. it used to only bother me because every once in a while it would feel like it got stuck on something. it would make it kind of difficult to swallow, similar to the way it is when your throat is all swollen from being sick. it also makes the lump area uncomfortable too when it gets "stuck". the only way i know how to get it unstuck is to kind of move my head to the left some and swallow a few times till it goes back to normal. lately the "lump" area has been hurting a little at times. nothing big, just a dull pain that lasts a few seconds. i had… [cont.]

A. The location you describe has nothing to do with the vocal cords. I don't know where your doctor took anatomy, but there is plenty of cartilage in the neck; tracheal rings, thyroid, arytenoid, and cricoid cartilages are all in the neck. My guess would be a polyp. They don't tend to be painful. If it was cancer, it would have been painful and have been much more severe by now. There are several types of polyps determined by where they are sited. My suggestion is to see an ENT, preferrably at an academic medical center (teaching hospital). They are more likely to do an extensive work-up than a doctor in private practice would.

Should I seek a second opinion?
Q. For many years now I have had this constant cough, clearing of my throat and my lungs feel pressure. I am 27 and have had the drainage and clearing of my throat since jr high. Back then, my physician couldn't find out the issue. I have been told that I do not suffer from asthma. I still clear my throat constantly and have a constant sensation to cough. My lungs feel as though they are 2 balloons being squeezed, but I don't have a problem breating. I went to my physician very recently and he put me on Astelin, which has seemed to help what i thought was post nasal drip. It hasn't cleared me up 100% but has helped. He also referred me to a ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialist. The specialist didn't do any tests that i thought he… [cont.]

A. In all of this information, you didn't mention whether or not you had chest x-rays. I'm assuming one of those quacks ordered it. YES, you need another opinion and keep going until you are satisfied. constantly clearing your throat can cause the vocal cords to swell, but are you horse? that goes with it. I don't like how you said the balloon affects in your lungs. Have you been tested for cystic fibrosis. Usually it's detected in your children but not uncommon to get it as an adult. or teen. I was tested at 58 yrs old at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston where thy specialize in cystic fibrosis. The best in the country. anyway, get another opinion. One way you can test yourself is put your tongue on your arm and see if it's salty. … [cont.]

Please help! Problems with singing.?
Q. I'm a classical singer and a high soprano. I also have issues with anxiety. In the past 2 weeks, it seems almost suddenly, every time I start to sing, I get this tight feeling in the back of my throat, almost like a tickle. I'm unsure if it's nerves, a swollen vocal cord, or something else. Also, a lot of the time, when I go for a higher note, I'll get nothing but air at fist, and then a sound will come out. This combined with the weird tightness is really starting to freak me out! Is my anxiety about losing my voice materializing into something real?! Has anybody ever heard of anything like this or has it happened to you? Thanks! However, if it's insufficiant breath support, why has this never happened before? I haven't changed anything,… [cont.]

Assitance with Vocal problems!?
Q. I have recently been singing alot - not 100% sure if I have been singing properly or damaging my voice but still. Anyway I've been exercising my voice lately and now i think i may have swollen glands, along with a very sore and painful throat. Although most recently i have just recovered from a cold and I don't think i gave myself enough time to recover. Im a male singing and I can sing rather high pitched and low. What are your suggestions please?

A. Give your singing voice some rest, no sense in pushing it. Try some green tea with honey, good for the pipes.
